ABSTRACT

Vegetable production in Nigeria is spatially distributed along the country's ecological setting, the five zones differing in intensity of cultivation. Gibberd and Gibberd (1979) noted that the vegetable varieties that can be grown in the tropics and the method of cultivation

employed are largely determined by altitude and proximity to the coast. At very high altitudes (5000 feet or more), conditions approximate more closely those that obtain in temperate zones. In the rain-forest, vegetable production is difficult while in the savannas the best results are obtained in the dry season.
