ABSTRACT
Soil is the fragile yet productive skin of our planet. Soil also occupies a critical position between the atmosphere and the Earth for it lies astride the main thoroughfare along which water enters our subterranean and surface reservoirs. A clean, healthy and productive soil is a social and economic imperative. Scientific research and development needs to work towards providing the underpinning knowledge to permit sustainable management of our soil resource, and to develop tools and strategies to remediate soil that has already become degraded or contaminated.
