ABSTRACT

The world population is likely to reach 10 billion by 2050. About 95% of additional 4. 3 billion population by 2050 will be residing in developing countries, which is the home of roughly three-fourths of the global population. Accordingly, the food demand in the developing countries is likely to double by 2025 from the present level of production. All these indicators demand a rapid increase in global production to meet the food security concerns. The "Green Revolution" brought about in the mid seventies through introduction of semi-dwarf varieties of wheat and rice has provided the much-needed selfsufficiency in food production in the region, although the food security continues to be a mirage for millions of poor with little purchasing power.
