ABSTRACT

If allowed to persist, liver fibrosis can eventually proceed to cirrhosis, a life threatening condition that is characterized by bridging fibrosis and if left untreated can ultimately lead to organ failure and death. Currently, the only treatment for cirrhosis is liver transplant. There are many causes of liver fibrosis that includes excessive ethanol consumption, viral hepatitis, iron or copper overload, biliary obstruction, parasitic infections including schistosomiasis, drug-induced, and autoimmune hepatitis (Fig. 1.1).
