ABSTRACT

India and Iran are two major producers, and suppliers, of cumin in the world. Considering the unique position of this crop in the world and its specific location across India and Iran, mainly Khorasan in Iran and Rajasthan in India, the economical dimensions of this crop have made phenomenal inroads in the local and foreign markets, the magnitude of which is yet to be fathomed. To obtain a deeper insight of the economy of cumin production, the following features are reviewed in this chapter: (1) economical aspects of cumin at federal level and beyond, (2) distribution process and export. Moreover, the handling and marketing network inside the country, initial and terminal source of export, and problems encountered are being studied. Meanwhile, special attention has been paid to socioeconomical characteristics of the producers and the variations in the price of cumin.
