ABSTRACT
Viviparity in teleosts is restricted to an estimated 510 species belonging to 13 families: Poeciliidae, Clinidae, Labrisomidae, Anablepidae, Zoarcidae, Parabrotulidae, Bythitidae, Aphyonidae, Zenarchopteridae, Goodeidae, Scorpaenidae, Comephoridae and Embiotocidae. Given current estimates of the total species of teleosts, over 27,000, viviparous species comprise fewer than 2% of all bony fishes (Wourms 1988, 2005; Wake 1989).
