UPS (as letters) abbr. A stand-alone backup for AC power sources. Short for Uninterruptible Power Supply. If or when the power goes out, a battery in the UPS is switched on and used to power anything plugged into it for as long as possible. Although a UPS won’t run forever, it is a critical component for any system that must achieve five nines reliability.
