ABSTRACT

Engineers have a compelling story to tell. If they can tell it in a form policymakers understand, those leaders will give it greater consideration. The challenge lies in putting a "human" or "emotional" face onto highly technical issues; most policymakers have limited technical background and little time and resources to learn about such issues. By communicating effectively, engineers create understanding and "buy-in" from federal policymakers while promoting the engineering profession. Engineers can learn to communicate at the "grassroots" or local level; such effort has proven effective in influencing federal policy decisions. This paper offers recommendations for becoming more conversant and effective in communicating with your federally elected representatives.
