ABSTRACT
Throughout their history the railways have endeavoured to reduce their fuel bill. In the days of steam traction, for example, drivers were paid a bonus if coal could be saved. On electrified lines some suburban routes were equipped with coasting boards as an aid to reducing electricity consumption.
