ABSTRACT
The environmental impacts of nuclear power stations and the nuclear fuel cycle need to be seen in perspective. Nuclear power stations differ from fossil-fuelled stations only in the source of heat, a nuclear reactor being substituted for a furnace. All modern stations are large installations which require cooling on a vast scale and connection to the national electricity distribution grid; their direct environmental impacts follow from these requirements, e.g. land use, visual intrusion, noise and waste heat.
