ABSTRACT

Thomson et al. 1996; Tomasula et al. 1996; Housner et al. 1997; Adeli and Saleh 1997 &

1999; Edwards and Spurgeon 1998; Bani-Hani and Ghaboussi 1998a&b; Saleh and Adeli

1998a&b; Lu et al. 1998; Hung et al. 2000; Connor 2003; Adeli and Kim 2004; Kim and

Adeli 2004), and various control strategies have been proposed, such as sliding mode control (Edwards and Spurgeon 1998) and optimal polynomial control (Agrawal and

Yang 1996). However, most of the studies have focused on the application of classical

linear control theories such as linear quadratic regulator (LQR) feedback control algorithm (Soong 1990) and linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control algorithm (Stein

and Athans 1987). These algorithms control structural responses effectively only when

the structure is small and assumed to behave linearly.
