ABSTRACT

Traditionally, in mechanical engineering we do not consider the practical application of pollution control, resource conservation, reuse, and recyclability of a product. We are not concerned with pollution and resources but deal mainly with stress, strain, and strength in designing a product. The time has come to include the concept of materials preservations due to depletion of resources, energy preservation, and pollution. Sustainability is the practical application of these principles. Sustainability involves a broad range of disciplines, and engineers should be sufficiently informed about the vitality of sustainability. Sometimes, the concept of sustainability is applied in system design, but never in component design. Sustainability considerations will reduce the depletion of resources and emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere. It will help to conserve resources and the earth itself for future generations.
