ABSTRACT

Process safety systems provide the detailed requirements of the process safety program to ensure that process hazards have been identified and evaluated before being first introduced into the workplace, and that process risks are successfully controlled every minute of every day. This chapter provides a framework for effective process safety systems and includes additional discussion on management of process risks. Risk estimates are made individually for specific event scenarios, usually based on the predicted worst case consequences and the actual frequency. Different risk levels are typically indicated by showing the boxes as different colors, such as green, yellow, and red. Process safety systems have been developed based on regulatory, industry guidance, and in some cases, individual organization needs. The chapter discusses the two most commonly encountered barrier models in process safety applications-the Swiss Cheese Model and Bow Tie diagrams.
