ABSTRACT

Anaerobic digestion is the fermentation of organic wastes in the absence of free oxygen (Abbasi et al. 2012). The products of anaerobic digestion are an energy-rich biogas (methane and carbon dioxide) and nutrient-rich digestate (waste liquor and solid waste), which is typically applied as a fertilizer. A typical anaerobic digestion facility using municipal solid waste (MSW) as its feedstock will produce 15% biogas, 42.5% digestate liquor and 42.5% digestate solids by mass (Ostrem et al. 2004).
