ABSTRACT

The pyrolysis process is the decomposition of carbonaceous material by thermal means, in the absence of oxygen. Typical products obtained from biomass pyrolysis are oil, gas and charcoal in varying proportions, depending on the type and conditions of the pyrolysis process. Biomass feed material is lignocellulosic, referring to the chemical composition of the material, which is composed of the lignin and cellulose that form the hard structure of the plant matter and the hemicellulose that binds the lignin and cellulose. The major categories of lignocellulosic biomass appropriate for pyrolysis are forestry residues, crop residues, paper/cardboard/organic municipal waste and sewage sludge.
