It is used as raw in sandwiches, salads, etc. It ranks first in the processed vegetables and its main processed products arc paste, sauce, and ketchup.

The annual production of tomato at the world level is estimated to be 95,127,000 metric tons from an area of 3542,000 ha. In India, it is grown in an area of 360,000 ha producing 5,450,000 metric tons. Average yield in India is about 15,139 kg/ha as against 26,860 kg/ha at the world level (Anon, 1999).
