The five possible 2D Bravais nets have been introduced in Chapter 2, and their point symmetry elements are shown in Figure 2.3. In a similar way to three-dimensional lattices, it is also convenient to define the Miller indices, Eq.(3.3), of a given orientation in the 2D lattice. A particular set of atomic rows in the surface net, all parallel to the line which intersects the unit mesh at as / h and bs I k , is labelled by convention as (hk). Figure 11.1 shows a square, a rectangular and a hexagonal net consistent with low-index (hkl) planes of the face-centred cubic lattice.
