ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the main types o f reactions that transition metal carbonyl clusters undergo. Attention is focused on the differences in reactivity between clusters and mononuclear carbonyl complexes. These differences are traced to the specific bonding requirements o f clusters. Mechanistic details illustrating the importance o f metal-metal bond breaking/reformation in reactions are described. The last two sections deal with carbide formation and cluster decomposition reactions that are unique to polynuclear compounds.
