3.1. INTRODUCTION

Currently, the manufacture of die cast metal components is a labor intensive manual task. This is often due to the complexity of the workpiece design. Figure 1 shows the types of workpieces cast. The components are charac­ terized by often complex 3D surface geometries, and after grinding appear under most illuminations as very bright smooth surfaces with considerable amounts of intense highlights due to specular reflections from the lighting arrangement.
