ABSTRACT
Bacteria must be able to quickly adapt and innovate to cope with the harassment of a continuously changing environment. Acquisition of point mutations widely contributes to this necessary adaptation but an appropriate response also requires the exchange and the assembly and/or reshuffling of genetic material. Mobile elements play a crucial role in these latter processes by providing the bacterial community with a pool of mobile genes and recombination machineries which favour the reshuffling of genes.
