ABSTRACT

A particularly clear example of the transcriptional control of gene expression by divalent metal ions is the selective induction of metallothionein mRNA synthesis by Cd2+ and other divalent metal ions (Compere and Palmiter, 1981; Durnam and Palmiter, 1981, 1984; Hamer, 1986; Suzuki et al., 1993; Skroch et al., 1993; Winge et al., 1994; Palmiter, 1994; Saijoh et al., 1994), that may serve as model for the exploration of the induction of gene expression by Ca2+.
