ABSTRACT
The ability to pursue a successful research career usually requires funds. To obtain research funds a researcher must satisfy the assessment criteria of research granting agencies through the process known as peer review. The archives of the granting agencies constitute a considerable resource for studies of peer review. The agencies are concerned that their assessment criteria are sound, and it may be that, from time to time, agency staff have used this resource. However, the results of these studies have seldom appeared in a form permitting critical analysis by the research community.
