Unlike skeletal muscle myoblasts, cardiac myoblasts do not fuse with each other to form a syncytium (multinucleated mass of cytoplasm). Rather, they develop unique cell junctions that become the intercalated discs of the heart. Some cardiac myoblasts give rise to Purkinje fibers (modified heart muscle fibers), which make up the electrical conducting system of the heart.
