ABSTRACT
The interest in one dimensional wave propagation theory for understanding pile driving is more than a century old. Perhaps, the pile driving problem was a major motivation in deriving and solving the one di mensional wave equation since those people that were active in that effort were mostly Civil Engi neers. The important work done in this area that re lates directly to current applications to pile driving started shortly after the Second World War and con tinued to the present.
