ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Over the last 30 years a number of hazard and risk studies involving large rockslides have been completed in Western Canada. Several examples are summarised. Probably the most detailed hazard studies have been completed by BC Hydro, the publicly-owned electricity producer in the Province of British Columbia. Some hazard studies have also been commissioned by government regulatory agencies. No standard methodology can as yet be recommended for such work. Each case must be investigated on its own merits. Detailed geological work and monitoring is an important part of hazard studies. Recent developments in run-out assessment techniques will be a useful additional tool.
