ABSTRACT

An input device is a mechanism to communicate intention or action to a technology system. The button is a classic input device. Pushing buttons to get a receipt from an automated gasoline pump, to fix time and temperature settings for a microwave oven, to dial a number on a telephony device, are all examples of actions taken with input devices. So, too, is speaking into a microphone system to order a meal from a drive-through restaurant or to respond to an automated voice response system with a menu item (e.g., in response to the prompt to “Press or say one”).
