ABSTRACT

There are many publications on pattern formation and chaos in minimal preypredator models, also for phytoplankton-zooplankton dynamics with patchiness and blooming that will be in the focus of this chapter. In contrast, not so much is known on about marine viruses and their role in aquatic ecosystems and the species that they infect; for reviews cf. Fuhrman (1999); Wommack and Colwell (2000) as well as Suttle (2000, 2005). Jacquet et al. (2002) have found that viral infection might accelerate the termination of phytoplankton blooms.
