1.1. INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this chapter is to give a theoretical basis for some sample finite elements which can be used to analyse long, slender straight members whose cross-sections can be classified as thin-walled. This theoretical basis can be extended to develop finite elements appropriate to curved members, or more complex behavior to be experienced by the straight members.
