ABSTRACT
The cultivated area on earth is about 15 million km2. From this area about 2·7 million km2 are irrigated, and about 1·5 million km2 drained.1 A special type of drained land is a ‘polder’, generally found in low-lying coastal areas, river plains, shallow lakes, lagoons and upland depressions.
