ABSTRACT
To apply uniform compression to the specimens a simple rig was built to be used on a Tinius Olsen testing machine. The general assembly of the rig is shown in Fig. 2. The rig consists of two plattens, a top platten which is attached to the Tinius Olsen crosshead, and a bottom platten mounted on a ball table which in turn is placed on the Tinius Olsen platform. Four jacks are provided for holding the bottom platten in position during the experiment. To facilitate handling and adjustment of the rig prior to testing, the plattens were connected by adjustable screwed tie rods (not shown in the figure), which were removed after setting up each test.
