ABSTRACT

Composting of slaughterhouse solid waste, consisting mainly of paunch grass and stockyard solids, is a viable alternative to dumping. Temperature-controlled aerated static-pile composting, using positive pressure

ventilation, rapidly produces a stable, high-quality compost. Sawdust, granulated bark and pumice sand are suitable bulking agents, and are required in small quantities, mainly to improve the structure of the finished

compost for use as a potting mix. The compost supports good plant growth and does not require nutrient amendment.
