ABSTRACT

Present evidence suggests that the adsorption on particles plays an important role in the transport of 10Be in the ocean. As a pilot study for a possible larger study, we have therefore carried out an experiment in which both the "soluble" and particle associated lOBe have been measured in a 271 liter surface water sample taken near Bermuda. The results show that < 2% of the lOBe in this sample is retained by the 1 pm filter. This is about an order of magnitude smaller retained fraction than for Th isotopes under similar conditions, thus suggesting that Be is somewhat less reactive than Th in the ocean.
