ABSTRACT

This paper presents a summary of an extensive--but selective--survey of literature describing research on crack growth in cementitious and aggregative materials subjected -to mixed-mode loadings. In general, the analytical and numerical models which have been proposed seek to determine the direction of extension of an existing crack and the intensity of loading at which this extension will occur. The numerous test geometries which have been proposed seek to obtain experimental evidence--on the macro-level--of the fracture mechanisms for concrete and rock when subjected to shear-type loads in combination with normal loads. Recom mendations are presented herein with respect to the round-robin program initiated by Subcommittee C of RILEM TC89-FMT.
