ABSTRACT

The oceanographers’ answer, I am sure, was the same as that of the high-energy physicists or the space scientists: the only investigations that can yield the ultimate truths of science are the kind done at sea. Theoreticians might predict. They might verify their predictions as well as they could from data gathered long before. But the ultimate test of their results comes only from the ocean itself, as explored by those who sail on its ever-changing surface or investigate its hidden depths.
