ABSTRACT

Abstract Some historical remarks on Wisconsin related research on Volterra integral equations are given.

In this talk I will discuss developments in the qualitative theory of solutions of nonlinear Volterra integral equations of the second kind. In particular, I am interested in the work of the Wisconsin school during the late 1950's and the 1960's. I should note that these are personal recollections not an attempt at a complete historical account. I should also note that the origins of this work were really at Georgia Tech, Oak Ridge and Lincoln Labs with a coming together at Wisconsin where nonlinear integral equations of all types were then under intense study. The initial motivation was to understand certain nuclear reactor models but the ultimate goal was to develop a general qualitative theory of Volterra integral equations.
