ABSTRACT

The character of 2D or 3D diffusion in a strong magnetic field critically depends on the type of boundary conditions on die vessel walls. In different situations the distinction in die particle lifetimes can reach orders of magnitude. Moreover, inserting special electrodes and applying voltage to them one can control the density profile in different parts of the vessel volume. The corresponding phenomena are very diverse and rather complicated, so in this Chapter we shall discuss only the simplest problem of plasma decay in basic configurations of a cylindrical vessel with dielectric or conducting walls.
