ABSTRACT
With the coming of the Industrial Revolution the demand for coal in Britain increased. Longwall mining evolved more or less at the same time, probably originating first in the Shropshire Coalfield. However, longwall mining has been used to mine other stratiform deposits, although it primarily is used to mine coal.
