ABSTRACT
Thunderstorms Thunderstorms are relatively small-scale phenomena that are always associ ated with tall cumulus clouds; very deep convective cloud is classed as cumulonimbus. On average in the US for example, a thunderstorm is around 20 km across and lasts some 30 minutes. Thus, as individual weather fea tures, they tend to affect relatively small areas for short periods.
