ABSTRACT
This excerpt by Borges appropriately illustrates the impossibility of representing all the aspects of reality (the Empire) with a model (the Map). In fact, when studying a real object from a scientific point of view, one needs to consider a small number of aspects while putting the others aside. The principal problems and the assumptions made concerning the relations between them constitute the model.
