ABSTRACT

This chapter is devoted to the special issues associated with the arrangement and design of

residential streets, as these follow different principles and satisfy different objectives than do

the major traffic routes discussed in the previous chapter. The chapter begins by examining

the residential street as part of a local development and then explores the associated needs of

the local community in terms of transport, amenity, and safety. Consideration is given to

such specific matters as the road hierarchy, pavement surface, pavement width, drainage,

kerbs, landscaping (Section 6.4), and street furniture (Section 7.4.3).
