ABSTRACT
Messages applied to the pavement surface to regulate, control, warn, partition or guide
traffic are known as pavement markings and are a form of traffic control device. They
may be used to supplement traffic signs (Chapter 21) or signals (Chapter 23) or to act in a
stand-alone mode. Pavement markings have a major advantage in that they convey
continuous information within the driver’s direct field of vision. Their installation
typically has a benefit–cost ratio of over 50.
