ABSTRACT

The purpose of this book is to cover all aspects of the technology of roads and road

transport. It is aimed at an audience which is able to lead itself, or to be led by others,

through technically-oriented material. That is, the book is not an introduction to roads for

the untrained. In writing it, I have aimed at:

* later-year undergraduates who have a lecturer to guide them, some background in

independently using the technical literature, and an understanding of basic

technical concepts;

* qualified professionals who have not been directly working in a particular sub-set

of road technology but who wish to acquaint themselves quickly with that

technology. The book is intended to give a background briefing and sometimes to

point the reader to sources of deeper understanding should this be desired;

* informed laymen wishing to gain a quick understanding of the technical implications of

a particular road-related technology; and

* librarians and information officers conducting information searches in the roads

area.
