ABSTRACT

ART. 13.1. INTRODUCTION B r i c k chimneys have to be stable on a gravity basis. Reinforced concrete chimneys, on the other hand, do not, due to the tensile strength of the reinforcements; and the shell thickness is deter mined by the compressive stresses on the leeward side. For these reasons, reinforced concrete chimneys can be made slimmer and lighter, with consequent savings in extent and cost of foundations. On congested or valuable sites, or where the ground is of poor bearing capacity, this makes for material advantage. Other merits of reinforced concrete chimneys include low cost, aesthetic satis faction, and greater permanence (making for reduced long-term maintenance costs).
