ABSTRACT
A b s t r a c t The h y d r a t i o n and s t r e n g t h development of 50:50 m i x e s c o n t a i n i n g c a l c i u m a l u m i n a t e cement (Ciment Fondu) and ground g r a n u l a t e d b l a s t F u r n a c e s l a g ( g g b f s ) , h a s been s t u d i e d . A r a n g e of c u r i n g t e m p e r a t u r e s from 5 t o 60°C were l o o k e d a t w i t h n e a t p a s t e s a m p l e s b e i n g u s e d f o r XRD and DTA a n a l y s i s w h e r e a s c o n c r e t e s a m p l e s were u s e d f o r t h e measurement of s t r e n g t h . T h e s e s t u d i e s showed t h a t t h e e a r l y h y d r a t i o n o f Ciment Fondu r e s u l t e d i n t h e f o r m a t i o n of h y d r a t e s t h a t would n o r m a l l y be e x p e c t e d from t h e pure cement. T h e r e i s e v i d e n c e t h a t a l l t h e h y d r a t e s o t h e r t h a n C 3 AHt s u b s e q u e n t l y r e a c t , i n c o r p o r a t i n g s i l i c a , t o form s t r a t l i n g h i t e , C eASH a. On c u r i n g a t h i g h e r t e m p e r a t u r e s C 3AH* was found t o be t h e p r i n c i p a l h y d r a t e and s t r e n g t h development was low. The p r o b a b l e r e a s o n s f o r t h e s e low s t r e n g t h s a r e d i s c u s s e d .
