ABSTRACT

Abstract Rheological techniques have been used to measure the behaviour of fresh cement pastes modified by the addition of a s t a b i l i s i n g surface active agent (SAA) and polymer latex p a r t i c l e s . The techniques were chosen to give minimal disturbance of the age-dependent structure development i n the paste. The s t a b i l i s i n g non-ionic SAA used i n the work was a nonylphenoxypoly(ethyleneoxy) ethanol, and the latex was of the styrene-butadiene r e s i n (SBR) type. Two latex samples were used: one had a p a r t i c l e diameter of 130 nm and the other a p a r t i c l e diameter of 197 nm. A l l of the measurements were performed on samples with a water:solids r a t i o of 0.3 9 ( i . e . a volume fraction of s o l i d p a r t i c l e s = 0.45).
