ABSTRACT
The principal objective in the design of underground excavation support is to help the rock mass to support itself.
Consider the example illustrated in figure 129 which shows a tunnel being driven by full face drill and blast methods with steel set supports being installed after each mucking cycle. The horizontal and vertical in situ stresses are assumed to be equal and to have a magnitude p0 .
