ABSTRACT

Detailed recommendations are given in section 4 of BS8110, Part 2, relating to the resistance to fire of various types of reinforced and prestressed concrete members; simpler but safe rules for minimum member sizes and cover are provided in Part 1 of the Code. The degree of fire resistance required depends on the size of the building and the use to which it is to be put. Part B of the Building Regulations 1985 deals with fire spread, although these general requirements may be modified by the local authority by-laws applicable to the location of the building under consideration. For buildings intended to be used for various purposes, the appropriate purpose group is that relating to the principal use. For each purpose group, certain limits to the height, the floor area of each storey and the cubic capacity are specified.
