Boussinesq proposed (1877) a simple expression for the mean shear stress te arising from the eddying fluctuations in turbulent flow, namely

This expression is comparable to that for laminar flow [shear stress — fi(dv/dy)]9 and 17, which is known as the eddy viscosity, has the same dimensions as /z. Unlike /z, however, 77 is not a fluid property, but is dependent on the turbulence characteristics.
