ABSTRACT

One reason for requiring teams is that there is too much for one person to do in terms of the effort he or she can exert and sustain. This can arise because separate events place too great a demand upon the individual. For example, a single person may be unable to lift a heavy object without help. Equally, an emergency situation may place too many demands on the single operator and, therefore, require that several people collaborate. Teams are also required to deal with those contingencies where too many demands arise at once for the individual to cope, even though the separate demands may be within the competency of the single operator. This means that there must be a sufficient number of people, with appropriate skills, available to deal with the workload that might arise.
