ABSTRACT
Figure 7.1 illustrates that, in principle at least, there are many opportunities to interrupt or change an accident process before it evolves into a loss. there are possibilities of totally changing the preconditions for an accident to occur eliminating the energy source, modifying the energy characteristics or limiting the amount of energy. Second, barriers may dilute or redirect the energy flow during the latter part of the accident process. This could include prevention of the uncontrolled release of energy, dilution of the energy transfer, separation of the victim from the energy or improving the victim's ability to endure the energy flow. the may be reduced after the occurrence of the accident through stabilisation, repair and rehabilitation.
